Mariposa County proclaims GIS Day, debuts new public mapping tools

The Board of Supervisors proclaimed Nov. 19, 2025 as GIS Day and GIS staff demonstrated a new public GIS viewer that consolidates parcel maps, APN downloads, a zoning lookup and an improved address locator to help public safety and residents access county data.
Mariposa County on Nov. 18 proclaimed Nov. 19 as GIS Day and showcased an upgraded public GIS viewer that consolidates several mapping tools. Planning Director Steve Inch and GIS staff highlighted the department’s role in emergency response and daily county operations.
Ben Orgain, senior GIS specialist, introduced Ethan Smith and described features of the new public viewer, including a main map with layered data (parcels, building department layers, public lands), an APN map viewer that provides downloadable assessor parcel maps, a parcel information map that shows assessor parcel numbers and tax-roll data (owner names are not displayed), a zoning lookup tool and an address locator. Ethan Smith explained the address improvements: “All of these represent our address points… the most accurate and current addressing inventory that the county has had,” and noted the tool’s value for first responders.
Board members and members of the public praised the tool. Supervisors asked about base‑map accuracy and parcel line precision; staff explained base maps come from third‑party providers and parcel lines are provided for reference only and not for legal boundary determination. The GIS unit said the APN viewer and parcel information map will reduce trips to county offices and improve access for residents and staff. The board voted unanimously to proclaim GIS Day and publicly thanked staff for the new tools.
