Dallas police: officer exchanged fire with armed 18-year-old; suspect, grandmother treated

Major Nathan Swires, identifying himself as a major with the Dallas Police Criminal Investigations Group, said the department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Feb. 2, 2026, at about 8:41 p.m. in a Dallas residence. “This marks the second officer involved shooting for the Dallas Police Department in 2026,” Swires said.
Swires said a 911 caller reported an 18-year-old, identified by police as Tony Robinson, was armed, refused to put the weapon away and had threatened to shoot the father and others inside the home. Officials said Robinson locked himself in a bathroom with his grandmother as family members attempted to prevent him from harming anyone.
“As the officer retreated for cover, an exchange of gunfire occurred,” Swires said. “Robinson fired 1 round, which struck the officer's ballistic vest. The officer returned fire, striking Robinson.” Swires described the details as preliminary and said they “may change as more information is confirmed.”
Swires said officers and bystanders rendered emergency aid until Dallas Fire Rescue arrived. Police said the suspect was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries; the grandmother was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and released. Portions of body-worn camera footage are being released by the department, Swires said, to provide transparency.
The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit is conducting the department’s probe, and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent investigation, as is required in all officer-involved shootings, Swires said. He also said the Office of Community Police Oversight has been briefed on the incident. Swires emphasized that the investigation remains active and that information may change as forensic evidence, witness statements and additional video are reviewed.
A recording of the 911 call released with the statement includes voices urging the subject to drop the weapon and reporting that a woman had been shot; callers on the audio request multiple ambulances and describe applying tourniquets and gauze while awaiting fire/EMS. Family members on the recording ask about the status of other relatives, with responders saying they were working on it.
The department said no additional details regarding use-of-force or the identities of responding officers were released in the initial statement. The Dallas County District Attorney's Office and the department's Special Investigations Unit will review the available evidence, including body-worn camera footage, before making any determination about legal or administrative action.
The department asked the public to note that the account is preliminary and that the investigative process is ongoing; officials did not provide an address in the initial recorded statement.
