Students present Martin Luther King Jr. speeches at Davis School District board meeting
Summary

Jane Alvey, a second grader from Parkside Elementary, opened the student presentation at the Davis School District board meeting, saying she chose the speech because “we should all be nice to each other like a family.”
Andrea Cole, a fourth grader from Holbrook Elementary, described her family’s immigrant story and quoted excerpts of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, telling the board the dream “is still life” for her family. Beatrice Edder, a junior at Farmington High School, read extended excerpts from Dr. King’s 1963 address and tied the words to “highly publicized events happening in our country.”
Dr. James Montero, assistant superintendent who introduced the winners, said the contest leaves a legacy for the district. Chris Carpenter, who helped coordinate entries and logistics, was also recognized by Montero for his work. President Gerard and other board members presented plaques to each student and thanked families and staff for their support.
The board framed the presentations as an example of student voice informing and inspiring district leaders. President Gerard said the speeches were “a real treat” and noted appreciation for the preparation by students and families.
The board then moved to the rest of its agenda after recognizing the students’ accomplishments.
