Dallas deputy chief: officer fired in July 27 shooting; department will release body-worn camera footage

Deputy Chief William Griffith of the Dallas Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Group briefed reporters on July 27, 2025, saying that at approximately 2:15 a.m. officers working in a uniformed off-duty capacity responded to a report of a gunshot in the 10700 block of Fennell Street. Griffith said 23-year-old Brian Cruz Campos was involved in a fight in a parking lot and fired a handgun, grazing another man’s face.

According to Griffith, officers moved toward the sound, saw two men fighting and observed Cruz Campos holding a handgun. Griffith said Officer Keenan Anderson gave repeated verbal commands for Cruz Campos to drop the gun. Griffith said Cruz Campos ignored the commands, ran, and then turned and lifted the gun; Officer Anderson fired one round that hit Cruz Campos in the right shoulder. Griffith said Cruz Campos ran across Fennell Street, dropped the gun while running, moved toward the handgun again and an additional round was fired that missed. Griffith said a cover officer kicked the gun away, officers attempted custody, Cruz Campos was tased to gain compliance, a tourniquet was applied to his arm, and Dallas Fire Rescue transported him to a local hospital in stable condition.

"Cruz Campos is charged with aggravated assault and evading arrest," Griffith said. He also stated: "To be transparent, the Dallas Police Department is releasing the body worn camera footage of this incident." Griffith said the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is conducting an internal investigation, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office was notified and will conduct its own review, and the office of community police oversight was notified and briefed.

On-scene audio recorded multiple speakers repeatedly ordering the person to 'Put it down' and 'Drop it' before and after the shots were fired. An unidentified on-scene speaker is heard saying, "He got a knife," a claim not confirmed in the department’s briefing and not described as verified evidence by Griffith during the public statement.

The department described this as the fifth Dallas police officer-involved shooting in 2025. The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will review the incident; the department said it is releasing body-worn camera footage to provide transparency. The investigation is ongoing and officials did not provide further details about the person Cruz Campos allegedly grazed, the specific weapon model, or the number of officers present beyond the names and units noted in the briefing.
