Herriman — The council announced a special City Council meeting set for the next evening at 5:30 p.m. to interview four applicants and appoint a new council member to fill a seat vacated when a councilmember moved outside the district.
Speaker 4 explained the appointment will fill the remainder of the current term (through the next inauguration in early January). The appointee may run in the upcoming election. The council described the vacancy process: the appointed member will serve until the special election this November, when the seat—scheduled as a two-year remainder term—will be on the ballot.
Speaker 2 asked for a public clarification of the process so residents would understand that the appointment is temporary and that the seat will be open for election under the special-election schedule. The council said the process is intended to balance immediate representation with voters’ opportunity to elect a candidate at the special election.
The council will hold an open interview process at the special meeting and expects the appointee to begin service immediately following appointment.
