Herriman reviews monthly status report; staff to verify vacancy-rate method

Herriman City Council members reviewed the city’s monthly status report at a March 12 work meeting and asked staff to verify how the city calculates residential vacancy rates.
Trevor, a city staff member who presented the report, said the vacancy rate is derived from meter-reading data: “The vacancy rate is derived from … just looking at 0 0 reads on water meters that we know there's a connection for.” Council members said the resulting rate appeared high given current market conditions, and staff acknowledged the measure can undercount occupied units when meter reads are irregular.
Council members asked whether the metric conflates short-term rentals and seasonal usage with true long-term vacancies. Trevor said staff have begun working with the GIS and water departments to “suss that out” and to determine whether adjustments or additional checks are needed.
The council did not take formal action on the measure but directed staff to continue the verification and report back; no timeline for a final correction was set during the work meeting.
