Council approves citywide cleanup week; staff to coordinate monitored dumpsters with partners

The Roosevelt City Council approved a plan to coordinate a citywide cleanup in cooperation with county partners, Interfaith Council volunteers and private contractors. Tentative dates discussed were the week beginning April 26 with a focused collection Saturday during that period.

Interfaith and partner representatives said prior experience with multiday dumpster placements led to problems—unauthorized dumping and large appliances left at sites. In response, staff and partners proposed a monitored, focused approach where dumpsters would be placed for a single Saturday and city crews or volunteers would monitor and ensure prohibited items are not left. "We would place dumpsters around the city and have city crews monitor them and pick up by 4 p.m.," a staff representative said.

Council discussed coordinating the cleanup with faith and community groups to provide shovel-ready projects and identified locations such as the walking path around Constitution Park for focused work by Interfaith volunteers. Staff also noted that the landfill director tentatively supports the planned dates but final confirmation will come from the landfill commission.

Council members moved and seconded a motion to adopt the cleanup week and asked staff to advertise the event and coordinate logistics, including dumpsters, volunteer assignments and public outreach. Staff and partner organizations volunteered to support social media and public information efforts.

The council recorded the motion as approved unanimously and directed staff to finalize dates and logistics with partners and the landfill.
