Mayor Palmer described a recent donation from Rio Tinto toward repurposing the city's Old City Hall as a community center and highlighted a mural painted in the stairwell by a local artist.
"This was a mural they painted in the stairwell... It's a floor to ceiling mural just well done," Mayor Palmer said on the Herrimanology podcast, noting the artwork "ties their history and culture with our history here" and serves as an homage to more than 120 years of mining history in the Salt Lake Valley. Officials held a small ribbon-cutting to celebrate the installation and encouraged residents to visit the community center to view the piece.
The mayor said Rio Tinto employees and the company have been "a huge part of this community for a lot of years," and framed the mural as a community partnership between the company and local artists. City staff asked residents to stop by the stairwell near the front of the building to view the mural during regular hours.
