Herriman mayor outlines pros, cons of proposed regional athletic complex; council seeking public input

Herriman’s mayor said the city is exploring a regional athletic complex that could bring new park space and commercial interest but acknowledged significant trade-offs and that no final decision has been made.

Mayor Palmer said officials are considering a regional facility of roughly 50 acres or more to qualify for outside funding and that developers and hotels have expressed early interest. “There are pros and cons of this,” he told the Herrimanology podcast, and added the council is reading every comment from residents. “Nothing's a done deal yet,” Palmer said.

Palmer said the proposal could be bookended by commercial properties and connect via trails to existing projects such as the Anthem and Winco-adjacent developments, potentially enabling more retail and hotel investment near Olympia. He also said the city would add park space as part of the plan.

But Palmer and host John LaFollette underscored traffic and water as open technical questions. LaFollette said professional traffic engineers are reviewing how roads would handle added demand and that water availability and distribution are part of ongoing planning. Palmer added that the council is weighing density concerns — noting some council members favor preserving lower-density lots with backyards — and that community sentiment will influence any future vote.

LaFollette directed listeners to the city’s athletic-complex webpage with an interactive map and said several community meetings are planned; Palmer urged residents to attend and submit comments before the council makes further decisions.
