Mayor reads student traffic-safety letter; state representative gives Lansing update

Marysville — During the communications segment of the Jan. 12 meeting, Mayor Hayman read a letter from Marysville Middle School student Gunner Skinner asking for a traffic signal at Delaware and Gratiot to improve pedestrian safety near schools and businesses. "I would like a traffic light placed in the intersection between Delaware and Gratiot," the letter said. The mayor said she forwarded the letter to City Manager Quentin Bishop and noted the matter will need review by county authorities and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
The council then heard from Representative Joe Pavlo, who identified himself as "represent[ing] you in Lansing." Pavlo provided a string of legislative updates: he said a "Josh Conant" bill was near release from committee, referenced work on 15 minimum-sentencing bills, and said funding requests for the Black River Canal would be reintroduced after failing in the prior budget session. He told the council he had been asked to serve on the House Republican Campaign Committee (HRCC) executive board and on a new committee described as the Michigan Department of Government Efficiency.
Mayor Hayman offered condolences to the Stark family for the death of Dori Stark, spouse of former mayor Harry Stark. A council member said the family wishes to donate a bench at a river or golf-course location and City Manager Bishop agreed to follow up on donation procedures with the family.
The mayor closed the meeting after routine items and adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
