VDOT outlines road repairs, overlays and sidewalk planning in Surry County quarterly update

A Virginia Department of Transportation representative presented a quarterly transportation update for Oct. 1–Dec. 31, 2025, reporting work‑order activity and planned maintenance across Surry County.

VDOT said the county generated 71 work‑order requests in the quarter and that 61 of those were completed, an 85.9% completion rate. County‑initiated work (147 requests) saw 139 completions for a 94.6% completion rate. "Surry County generated work order request. We received 71, in that quarter," the VDOT representative told the board.

VDOT listed pothole patching on county routes (including Routes 617, 605, 604, 634 and Route 31), pipe and driveway pipe cleaning, shoulder repairs, slope mowing and sign maintenance. Planned resurfacing includes a latex overlay on Route 31 from the stoplight to the pavement break before the ferry, scheduled for late April to early May as a preventative measure. Surface treatment (May–June start) and primary/secondary mowing cycles were also described. VDOT said bridge substructure work is underway on the Route 617 bridge over the Blackwater River; lane closures are expected but most work is being done from boats or scaffolding.

VDOT noted preliminary engineering is underway for sidewalks on Bank Street to create continuous pedestrian facilities between Colonial Trail East and School Street, but that project is not fully funded. Board members thanked VDOT for winter response and asked staff to consider traffic maintenance during the upcoming resurfacing and local power‑station outage periods.

VDOT said it will return with updates as projects progress and scheduling is refined.
