The Surry County Board of Supervisors approved a sidewalk and crosswalk project linking the high school and middle school campus areas and parts of Hollybush. Staff reported three bids between about $82,000 and $93,000 and recommended accepting Cypress Woods' low bid of $82,950. Because the project was not included in the FY26 CIP, staff proposed transferring funds from fund balance and amending the FY25/26 CIP to cover the cost.
The motion to accept the bid and to authorize a $90,000 CIP amendment from fund balance passed on a voice vote ('Aye'). Staff said VDOT will handle striping and sign installation after the sidewalks are installed and that county engineers coordinated design with the Department of Transportation prior to the award.
Board members described the project as a long‑awaited safety improvement that will help protect students during daily dismissal and bus movements. Staff will prepare the procurement and contract documents and proceed with the work once funding adjustments are finalized.
