Planning commission reviews schedule change, development updates and staffing concerns

The planning commission approved a revision to the 2026 meeting calendar, moving the July meeting from July 9 to July 16 (third Thursday at 7 p.m.), and adopted the remainder of the schedule as presented.

Commissioners approved the November 13 minutes (with a September 11 correction referenced) and the December 11 minutes by unanimous vote. During new business staff provided project updates: Mr. Prince said the Keith Estates site plan review is progressing and was granted conditional approval pending required improvements; two asphalt-related tank projects and a proposed Feed and Save (Homeland Feed) store on Route 460 have submitted site plans and remain conditionally approved pending financing and building plans.

Members raised concerns about planning department workload and staffing. One commissioner said multiple requests for proposals had arrived and asked whether Reagan's office had capacity to process the volume; Mr. Prince confirmed hiring or reassignment to add environmental engineering capacity and additional inspectors is under consideration and that he would raise staffing needs with the county administrator.

Commissioners also discussed data centers and battery storage proposals in other localities and requested staff gather model ordinances or examples from counties that have adopted moratoria, technology-overlay districts or other controls. Several members said they would like additional briefings or visits with neighboring localities that have experience with such developments.

The meeting closed after a short update that proponents of a Norway River designation were pausing their effort and planned to return later in the year. A motion to adjourn passed and the commission set its next meeting for Thursday in February.
