The Southampton County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously July 22 to adopt a resolution creating a Franklin–Southampton VA250 committee to coordinate local activities commemorating Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary War.
County Administrator Mr. Thor read the draft resolution, which says the locality will "form a local Virginia 250 committee" to plan and coordinate programming and to communicate with the Virginia 250 commission. The resolution names a slate of local appointees drawn from civic and cultural organizations in Franklin and Southampton County.
During the reading, a correction was made to one of the listed tribal appointees: a board member clarified that Chief Walt Brown referenced in the draft is Chief Walt Brown of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe. After that correction the board moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote.
Mr. Thor and Carl Heck noted that the committee will coordinate with the city of Franklin to activate the committee and that planning could extend across years, with some activities running through 2033 according to the presentation.
The board did not record any roll-call opposition to the resolution in the transcript.
