The Erie City Council on Jan. 7 unanimously elected Tyler Titus as council president and Kathy Schauff as vice president, approving both nominations by 7-0 votes.
Councilmember Kathy Schauff sponsored the resolution nominating Tyler Titus and Councilmember Flores seconded it; Councilmember Flores praised Titus’s hands-on leadership and information-sharing, saying, “They’re very hands on and very informative as far as keeping council informed on what they’re working on and what we’re going to be moving forward as a body.” The resolution passed with all seven members voting in favor.
In remarks after the election, President Titus said the council’s composition represented a milestone. “I’m the first trans person to ever hold this position, in the commonwealth,” Titus said, and pledged to lead with “transparency, accessibility, and a laser focus on equity.” He also thanked colleagues and the new administration for their cooperation.
Council members and the mayor exchanged congratulations during committee reports and the mayor reiterated plans for outreach and coordination with council on priorities in the coming weeks.
The council’s vote on the leadership nominations was recorded as unanimous; the meeting record shows members Brzezinski, Flores, Horton, Pohl, Shoff, Troop, and Titus present for and voting on the nominations. The council proceeded with the rest of its agenda after confirming leadership.
