Superintendent: Thunder Vista will remain closed this semester for electrical repairs; community meeting set

Superintendent Chris told the Adams 12 Five Star Schools board on Jan. 21 that Thunder Vista will not reopen this semester because the district must complete repairs to the building’s electrical system to “make it safe and to prevent recurrence of similar circumstances.” He said the district is committed to returning the school in the fall and will hold a community meeting Friday to explain the timeline and answer questions.

Chris said safety is the district’s top priority and characterized the situation as “challenging, not the answer we wanted, but it’s the answer that we need, to move forward with.” He reported the leadership team is coordinating with school and system leaders to support students and staff during the transition.

Board members and staff framed the closure in the broader context of facilities work and asset‑management challenges the district faces. The administration noted earlier monitoring work on asset protection and deferred maintenance, and said some emergency and capital repairs (including underground utilities at Thunder Vista) have required purchases above the $500,000 board‑approval threshold but were presented to the board as decision information reports.

Next steps: the superintendent said the district will meet Friday with Thunder Vista families to explain the reasons for the extended transition, provide details about student placement while repairs continue and outline timing toward reopening in the fall. The district will return to the board with recommendations and updates on repair scope and schedule.
