House citation recognizes Melvin Witherspoon’s years of service to Erie City Council

The Erie City Council accepted a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives honoring Melvin Witherspoon for his years of public service.
A reader presented the citation, sponsored by Representative Patrick J. Harkins of the 1st Legislative District, noting that "Melvin Witherspoon was elected in 1995 as the first African American elected to Erie City Council since 1977" and that he served with integrity, including a final term as council president. The citation directed that a copy be delivered to City Hall at 626 State Street in Erie.
Melvin Witherspoon thanked Representative Harkins and the House for the recognition and said the honor belonged to "the people of the city of Erie."
