City approves $30,500 OTS grant host agreement to support Move SB bike and pedestrian education

The Carpinteria City Council on Aug. 25 voted unanimously to authorize the city manager to execute a grant agreement with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and to appropriate $30,500 to receive and subgrant those funds to Move Santa Barbara County to deliver pedestrian and bicycle safety programs.
City staff explained OTS made a conditional award of $30,500; OTS requires a public agency to act as grant host. Move Santa Barbara (Move SB) will deliver program services — safety fairs, helmet fittings and distributions, school rodeos, community rides and outreach — while the city will manage compliance, vendor payments and reimbursement submissions.
Martina Sexton of Move SB described last year’s results in Carpinteria: helmet fittings and classroom bike safety education for elementary and middle school students, and outreach to high school students about e‑bike safety. Council members requested that Move SB provide post‑grant reporting; staff said OTS reporting and quarterly status updates will be available to council.
Vice Mayor Salorsenau moved adoption of Resolution 6418; the motion passed by roll call with Ayes from Vice Mayor Salorsenau and all council members present.
