Hanford council picks three new planning commissioners after interviews

The Hanford City Council interviewed four finalists for two regular planning commission seats and one alternate on Feb. 3 and then voted to appoint two regular commissioners and an alternate.
City staff said the panel had randomly ordered the finalists after a subcommittee interview process; candidates had been narrowed from 11 applicants. Council interviewed Lisa McElwain, Cecily Esparza, Parveer Gill and Jonathan Juarez (finalist names as presented).
Cecily Esparza received the highest overall score from the subcommittee and was offered a regular seat. Parveer Gill, a civil engineer who emphasized infrastructure capacity, connectivity and drainage during his interview, was selected for the second regular seat. Lisa McElwain, who described facilities management and feasibility study experience and focused on community engagement, was named the alternate. Council said it will retain Jonathan Juarez's application for future openings and encouraged him to remain active.
Mayor Kyres said staff will bring the final appointment paperwork back under general business; council approved the appointments unanimously.
Council members noted the difficulty of choosing from well-qualified candidates and asked staff to keep the fourth-ranked candidate in the pool for future vacancies.
