DENTON COUNTY — Hearts 4 Homes, a local nonprofit, packed and delivered two large Christmas baskets each to 84 low-income senior homeowners this holiday season, organizers and volunteers said.
"They received 2 large baskets, 1 filled with food and another stacked with everyday necessities," said S1 (Kimberly Barroteran), describing the contents distributed by the group. Volunteers said the food portions are substantial: "We've had seniors actually tell us that they can live 2 to 3 months off the food that's in the baskets," S2 (Volunteer) said.
The project has grown significantly since it began on a small scale. "The first time we did it, we had 8 volunteers delivering to 5 seniors. Today, we've got about 125 volunteers going out to deliver to 84 seniors," S2 said, noting a rise in both volunteer participation and the number of households served.
Organizers emphasized that the deliveries provide more than material aid. "We may be the only visitors they have this Christmas season," S2 said, describing how volunteers turn each drop-off into a personal visit. Volunteers on site echoed that sentiment, praising multigenerational family involvement and the emotional reward of seeing recipients' reactions.
S3 (Volunteer), who attended deliveries with family members across generations, said the experience was especially meaningful for children and older relatives alike. "It just blesses me every time we do this to have the kids and then their kids and the babies now, the great grandbabies now," S3 said.
Volunteers described a range of reactions from recipients: surprise at the amount of goods, gratitude, and visible relief. "People, when they get a certain age, they certainly appreciate everything even more," S4 (Volunteer) said.
The group did not provide details on the baskets' total cost, funding sources, or selection criteria for recipients during this segment. Hearts 4 Homes organizers indicated the program runs each holiday season and relies on volunteer labor to pack and deliver the baskets.
