Council member Christiansen presented an update from the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District on Aug. 12, describing a proposed 2026 tax increase of about $320,000 to support cost stabilization, expanded drone‑based surveillance and treatment, data system upgrades, ecologically targeted control measures and capital needs. Christiansen said the district’s rate has not changed materially since 2012 and that the requested increase would have a modest household impact: roughly $0.99 per year for the average homeowner and approximately $4.50 per year for businesses, according to figures cited in the presentation.
Christiansen summarized anticipated uses of the increase: about $160,000 for essential services/cost stabilization, approximately $100,000 for operational and ecological enhancements (including drone surveillance) and roughly $60,000 for capital expenditures. He noted the district’s public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8, 2026, and that formal voter action would occur at the district level next year. The council did not act on the matter at the study session; staff provided printed copies of the proposal for council review and indicated the issue will be on the general meeting agenda in two weeks for further consideration.
