Utah SHPO webinar shows how to research and preserve historic properties

At a Utah State Historic Preservation Office “Chippewa Brown Bag” webinar, SHPO staff walked homeowners, preservation commissioners and volunteers through the tools and steps needed to research and advocate for historic properties across Utah.
"A building becomes historic when it is 50 years or older," said Deb Miller, records manager at the Utah SHPO, setting the baseline for which properties staff typically consider "historic properties." Miller and other SHPO presenters described how to locate records, interpret Sanborn fire-insurance maps and use the agency's mapping portal to find nomination files and archival photos.
Why it matters: local owners and volunteers often drive preservation efforts. The session explained how research fuels nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, connects owners to rehabilitation incentives and helps communities decide whether to pursue local protections.
