Gov. Greg Abbott signs $123 million line-item for Permian Basin 'Beacon' project

Governor Greg Abbott onstage in Midland said he had used a line-item approval to fund the Beacon Project with $123,000,000 in state support, calling the investment "historic." Abbott said the funding will "transform the entire Permian Basin region for decades" and that the money was "for you," referring to local residents and leaders.

The governor framed the line-item as part of the larger state budget and said the funds will support health-care facilities and related development tied to the Beacon. Abbott singled out participation from Texas Tech and University of Texas systems and listed partnerships with MD Anderson and Texas Children's as key elements of the project. "The funds in [a] historic $123,000,000 investment in the Beacon Project," he said.

Local officials described prior community investment and the Beacon as a long-sought regional anchor. Chairman Craig said the community had contributed roughly $100 million in recent years for mental-health and related facilities and that the Beacon will add new medical capacity and associated hotels and infrastructure. Craig said the Beacon will bring MD Anderson and Texas Children's facilities and make more specialized care available locally.

Officials said the funding is intended to attract visitors and residents, support hotel and convention growth and create long-term economic opportunities. Abbott and local leaders described the line-item as the final step to "get it across the finish line," and the governor thanked local advocates and legislators who pressed for the project.
