State Library Seeks to Reimagine Bookmobiles as Rural Needs Shift

"We currently have 4 bookmobiles, the actual vehicles on the road. We serve 8 counties," Rothman said, describing the Bookmobile and Rural Services program as intended "to bring library services to residents that don't have access to a public library that's within a reasonable distance of their home."
Rothman described how the mobile units follow schedules (typically every two weeks at each stop), sometimes serve as the primary library for schools during the academic year, and work with 'headquarters' libraries (permanent partner sites) that maintain larger collections and swap materials with vehicles.
While praising the impact—staff share "heartwarming and inspiring" patron stories—Rothman said bookmobiles are costly to maintain and the agency is developing alternative options. "A menu of rural services is the direction that we're going in and figuring out what that looks like," she said, adding that the State Library is collaborating with internal leaders to reimagine rural outreach.
No formal decisions or new funding commitments were announced during the interview. Rothman said the effort to evolve bookmobile services is a current operational priority rather than an enacted policy change.
