Camille Perkins told the West Valley City Council she represents "Mormons with Hope for a Better World" and asked the city to designate itself a sanctuary city and adopt policies that would limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Perkins asked the city to restrict collection and sharing of data regarding migratory status and to prohibit honoring immigration detainers in local facilities. She cited research by the National Academy of Sciences and a report from the Center for American Progress, saying sanctuary policies do not threaten public safety and can protect nonviolent immigrants without affecting criminal-justice avenues for violent crime.
The council received the request during the public-comment period. No council action or staff direction to draft policy changes was recorded in the meeting minutes; the matter remains a public comment without further deliberation in this session.
What’s next: Perkins asked the council to "show principled leadership" in protecting vulnerable residents; a formal policy proposal or staff report does not appear on this meeting’s record.
