The West Valley City Council on an unanimous vote approved Resolution 25-33 to accept $88,914 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program to fund police equipment and training.
Mayor Link opened the public hearing on the grant and said the department will use the award for "grama key license renewal," a Cellebrite license renewal, 25 ballistic vests and carriers, and four low-light camera kits. No members of the public spoke at the hearing and the council closed the hearing before taking the vote.
Why it matters: JAG awards typically support local law-enforcement training and equipment. The council’s acceptance makes the funds available for procurement and license renewals the police department said are allowable under the grant. The meeting record shows the motion to approve was made and seconded and the roll call returned unanimous "yes" responses as read in the minutes.
The council took no additional direction on programing or long-term policy changes tied to this award; the vote was a standard acceptance of grant funds that staff can use for the line items described. The meeting moved on to the consent agenda after the vote.
What’s next: With council approval, staff may proceed with license renewals and equipment purchases consistent with the grant terms and city procurement rules.
