Summary
Oakwood Schools Foundation trustees presented student-selected grants totaling $8,000 to local nonprofits and announced a winter grant cycle with more than $25,000 in combined support for teacher-led initiatives; an anonymous donor will fund nearly $7,000 in special-education equipment grants.
Maria Beecher, a trustee of the Oakwood Schools Foundation, presented checks and described the foundation's Philanthropy 101 partnership with Oakwood High School business-education teacher Natalie Johnston. The student program researches local nonprofits and helps determine funding.
Beecher said the students and trustees awarded Special Olympics Ohio $2,000 and Target Dayton Ministries $2,500 this year; she said the foundation granted a record $8,000 in total to the four participating organizations. Dori Spalding then described a winter grant cycle in which the foundation, the Oakwood Fine Arts Boosters and multiple PTOs collaborated to support seven teacher-led initiatives with more than $25,000 in combined support.
Spalding also announced an ongoing anonymous gift to support special-education grants. "This grant and financial support from each school's PTO made possible funding of 2 grants totaling almost $7,000 in needed equipment, which will be shared throughout the district," she said.
Board members and attendees were invited forward for a photo following the presentation.
The presentation emphasized community philanthropy and student involvement in grant decisions; no board action was required beyond acceptance of the presentation.
