Oakwood superintendent announces student’s death, proposes calendar change and flags ebike safety

Doctor Gupta, Oakwood City schools superintendent, opened the Feb. 9 meeting with news of the death of Oakwood High School senior Jack Temer and asked the board and community to observe a moment of silence. "Our hearts go out as a school community to the family, to the friends, to our staff," Gupta said, noting that crisis teams and school counselors were supporting students and staff.
Gupta told the board he would ask members to approve a narrow change to the 2026–27 school-year calendar: move the spring professional-development day from April 26 to March 19. He said the change would keep that day out of the state testing window and better align with families' spring break schedules. "Testing integrity" was cited as the primary rationale.
On student safety, Gupta flagged growing concerns about electric bicycles near school drop-off and pick-up points, urging families to reinforce safe behavior. "Those ebikes are able to go really, really fast," he said, asking parents to encourage students to dismount at intersections and obey traffic signs.
Gupta also highlighted academics, saying the district offers 18 Advanced Placement courses and that Oakwood earned a gold distinction for increased AP enrollment for the third consecutive year. He credited teachers and students for the achievement.
The board observed the moment of silence and later approved the recommended calendar revision as part of item 7 on the agenda. No additional policy actions on ebikes were taken at the meeting.
