Five candidates for Lincoln Heights Village Council outline platforms on transparency, safety and growth

Nona R. Calhounumia, an appointed member of the Lincoln Heights Village Council, said she assumed the seat on 02/12/2024 after no candidate ran in 2023 and framed her campaign around restoring trust in local government. “I stepped into the role with 1 belief that Lincoln Heights deserves leadership built on integrity, transparency, and community pride,” she said, and proposed a public finance dashboard, a village code of conduct and participatory budgeting to increase accountability and resident input.
Trina Carter, a music educator and fourth-generation resident, said she would prioritize listening to citizens and setting measurable, attainable goals that reflect community priorities. “I look forward to actively participating at every meeting to ensure your voice is heard,” Carter said, and urged voters to back candidates who will work cooperatively for progress.
Incumbent candidate Laverne Mitchell highlighted her municipal experience and said steady leadership is needed to address zoning, infrastructure and fiscal discipline. Mitchell said she would focus on housing stability, youth pathways to success and public safety if re-elected.
Karen Scott Hingston said her background on village commissions and previous council service informs her platform of accountability, opportunity and unity. She pledged to pursue safer streets through stronger relationships with law enforcement and to support housing policies that reduce displacement while promoting local economic development.
Norby Tate said his campaign centers on attracting businesses, grants and other revenue to strengthen the village economy. “I want the village of Lincoln Heights to function as a thriving community so we can grow, improve our service, and create a place where we are all more proud to call home,” Tate said, and asked for votes on Nov. 4.
No formal votes, motions or administrative actions were recorded during these statements; the session consisted of candidate remarks and campaign appeals. The statements collectively emphasized transparency, community engagement, public safety, housing stability and economic development as priorities for the next council.
