Council honors Alexandria Archaeological Commission, proclaims March Irish American Heritage Month

The City Council on Feb. 25 adopted a proclamation recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission. Councilmember El Newby presented the proclamation, which highlighted the commission’s long record of public archaeology and said the city curates archaeological collections it described in the proclamation as numbering about 3,000,000 artifacts spanning a long historical period. Members of the commission and staff, including city archaeologist Eleanor Breen and chair Ivy Whitlatch, introduced themselves and described the commission’s community programs; the council approved the proclamation by voice vote.
Separately, Councilmember McPike read and the council approved a proclamation declaring March Irish American Heritage Month. Parade organizers and volunteers from the Ballyshanters and parade marshals introduced themselves and encouraged attendance at the King Street St. Patrick’s Parade on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The council approved the proclamation and took photos with attendees.
