City to hold May 8 economic summit; TIP Strategies to lead strategic framework work

City staff and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) told the City Council on Feb. 25 that the city will host an economic summit on May 8 as the first step in developing a multi‑year strategic framework and action plan for equitable commercial growth.
Stephanie Landerer, president and CEO of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, introduced the city’s internal team and external consultants from TIP Strategies. TIP’s Tracy McDaniel and project lead Jen Todd Goins outlined a discovery phase that includes background review, data analysis, roundtables, one‑on‑one interviews, a community survey and a public summit. The consultants said recommendations will be grounded in community input, data and benchmarking against peer cities.
Councilmembers asked how the summit’s results will be translated into actionable steps. TIP said the short‑term follow‑up will include a summit report and a post‑summit survey to capture input from those unable to attend. Councilmembers suggested a subsequent council work session to consider implementation and to identify specific policy levers and budget implications that flow from summit recommendations.
Councilmembers and staff encouraged outreach to small businesses, and TIP said the team would begin stakeholder engagement immediately and accepted referrals through AEDP. The summit is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8; project materials and engagement opportunities will be posted on the city website.
