Three finalists present to Urbana Council to fill Ward 4 vacancy

Three finalists for the Ward 4 vacancy introduced themselves to the Urbana City Council Committee of the Whole on Feb. 16 and outlined priorities they would pursue if appointed.
Wendy Edwards described long ties to Urbana, a background in software and library science, and said her top concerns are fiscal stability, public safety and revitalizing distressed commercial corridors. She urged data-driven planning and cautioned about automatic license plate readers unless strong policies and public input are in place.
Verdell Jones said he is from the area and cited experience as a firefighter for the city of Champaign. Jones emphasized a local 'mental health crisis,' described housing and hoarding conditions he has seen in emergency responses, and urged collaborative leadership to address youth support and rising crime.
Karen James described long-term residency since 1998, community volunteerism on PTAs and health-related efforts, and said she would prioritize neighborhood stewardship and continuing local traditions such as the farmers market.
Mayor and council members thanked the candidates and asked them to remain after the meeting for follow-up questions. The council did not take a vote on an appointment during this meeting; the candidates’ statements will be part of the record when the council considers filling the Ward 4 vacancy.
