Planning commission approves replacement monopole, 10-year extension for wireless facility at 37822 6th Street East

The Palmdale City Planning Commission voted to approve a proposal to demolish an existing major wireless telecommunication facility at 37822 6th Street East and replace it with a new 56-foot monopole, a 240-square-foot equipment enclosure and a 10-year time extension for continued operation of the facility originally approved under "CUP 8 16." Staff recommended adoption of Resolution Number PC-twenty20 6001, and the motion passed with five "yes" votes.
Assistant Planner Juan Lopez presented the item, describing the site as being within the heavy industrial zone and noting that the proposed monopole is one foot shorter than the existing 57-foot tower. "The proposal includes constructing a new 56 foot monopole, along with associated equipment within the 240 square foot equipment enclosure and granting a 10 year time extension for the continued operation of the facility originally approved under CUP 8 16," Lopez said. He told commissioners the new monopole would have a light-gray finish to minimize visual contrast and that ground equipment would be screened by an existing 6-foot CMU wall.
During commissioner questioning, one commissioner asked whether a flag or other decorative element could be added to the monopole for improved aesthetics. An applicant representative speaking for SBA said the company is "just upgrading the pole" and that the upgrade was needed to provide additional capacity. "Aesthetically, I guess they need a little more capacity. Nothing much is gonna change, though," the representative said. He and staff also explained the proposed arm/array design would make attaching a flag impractical.
No members of the public submitted speaker cards for the hearing. After discussion, a motion to approve the project consistent with staff’s recommendation was made and seconded; the commission recorded the motion as approved with five affirmative votes.
The planning commission adopted Resolution Number PC-twenty20 6001 to approve the demolition and replacement of the wireless facility and the requested 10-year extension. The commission did not record any public opposition at the hearing. The item will proceed according to the normal implementation steps described in the resolution and permits.
