City staff outlines multiple park projects including Vista Sandia playground and Broadmoor Senior Center upgrades

City projects staff told the Parks and Recreation Commission on Feb. 16 that several park construction and design efforts are moving forward across Rio Rancho.
Diane Sonnier, projects division manager, said, "The actual playground structure is in," and crews are completing poured-in-place surfacing to provide fall attenuation and ADA access at Vista Sandia. The playground replacement and associated shade work were bond-funded, Sonnier said.
Sonnier said a 30-by-30 shade structure at Star Heights Park is slated to start in two to three weeks and is federally funded. She also described two outdoor pool pump replacement projects for Haines and Rainbow pools that are in the procurement process and hoped to be completed before the outdoor pool season.
On the Broadmoor Senior Center, Sonnier reported exterior terrace concrete and shade structures are installed and interior multipurpose room work is progressing, but exterior sewer and drainage conflicts have delayed the previously targeted March completion date. "It will be resolved," she said, though staff will need to coordinate solutions before finalizing the exterior work.
Sonnier said staff is procuring benches, trash cans, picnic tables and dog-waste stations for Campus Park phase 2, and midyear funding will pay for monument signage to improve wayfinding at the city center. She added the city has updated plan sets for Sports Complex phase 3 so it can pursue legislative appropriation or future grants.
Other projects in design include replacement of a cracked 12-foot asphalt trail through Enchanted Hills (along the Incontado Channel) to make it ADA compliant, the King Meadows Park parking lot replacement with formalized basketball courts, and the possible addition of six to eight pickleball courts, parking and connective trails at Sierra Norte Park.
Sonnier closed by previewing Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful activities and the 2026 Great American Cleanup, including a tree seedling giveaway and community stewardship events in the spring.
