The council’s interview panel interviewed candidates for the Commission on the Status of Children and Youth and recommended at least one council appointment after hearing candidates describe community work and program priorities.
Panel chair Council Member Sydney Zulick introduced the interviewers and told candidates they should expect a recommendation in a few weeks. Candidates described direct youth-service experience: one candidate (speaker 6) runs the Banneker Community Center’s after-school and summer-camp programs and noted prior work with Monroe County Schools and local nonprofits. Another candidate, Andrea, said she is a program director at the Boys & Girls Club (Lincoln Street Park), has volunteered since 2019 and described programmatic work that connects families to resources.
A recurring topic was social media and children’s attention and self-esteem. Andrea, who said she studied psychology and neuroscience at Indiana University, called attention and self-esteem among young girls “a huge need” and described the Boys & Girls Club’s approach: social-emotional learning, digital-safety trainings for third- through fifth-graders and efforts to bring parents into the conversation. The Banneker representative recounted a community response after a widely circulated social-media incident, when the center brought in a child psychologist, a police social worker and other partners to support students and families.
Panel confirmed the commission’s meeting cadence (third Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.) and asked whether candidates could meet that schedule; candidates indicated they could generally accommodate monthly meetings though program demands may require occasional flexibility.
The panel made a motion to appoint Alvarez to the council’s seat on the Commission on the Status of Children and Youth (Seat C1); the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Panel members said they will forward their recommendations to the mayor and full council and will notify applicants once the appointment package is finalized.
Next steps: the committee will transmit appointments and recommendations to the mayor and council; staff liaisons will be asked to update commission materials and rosters to reflect new members.
