Monroe County staff to discuss transfer of innkeepers-tax properties with council after Capital Improvement Board request

County staff told the Monroe County Commissioners that the Capital Improvement Board has requested the county transfer several parcels purchased with innkeepers tax near College and the Beeline Trail, citing use of the land to entice a hotel developer to partner with the convention center.
The staff presentation said the properties were acquired with innkeepers tax revenue and have been managed for retail, rental and apartment use by the Convention and Visitors Commission and the county’s management group. Staff emphasized the county is not evicting residents and said efforts are underway to relocate or provide comparable housing for tenants in buildings with structural issues.
Commissioners agreed the next step is to discuss terms and conditions of any transfer with the county council. One commissioner asked that the matter be added to the executive sessions already scheduled for Monday to allow the council to review values and any proposed transfer terms; staff said council approval would be required for any conveyance.
No formal motion or transfer was approved at the work session. The county signaled it intends to prepare materials for council consideration and to proceed with caution to ensure tenants are not abruptly displaced and that terms protect public funds.
"This whole proposal is in an effort to move further along toward getting a hotel developed to work with the convention center," staff said during the briefing. Commissioners stressed any transfer would need council approval and careful terms.
