Jayhawk Theater reports phase one completion, seeks remaining funding to finish restoration

Joanne, speaking for the Jayhawk project, said phase one is complete and the alley foundation restoration is finished. The project team has secured roughly 42,000 square feet of property through acquisitions and donations and has obtained more than $1,000,000 in new grant funding to install an elevator providing balcony access.
Joanne said the theater's restoration leverages historic tax credits, and that every new dollar committed at this stage would leverage roughly $2.02 in historic tax credits. The project aims for expanded seating and flexible configurations (target just under 1,000 seated and about 1,300 standing) to attract larger artists and events. Jayhawk leaders described additional national funding opportunities on the horizon but did not make a specific TGT funding request at this meeting.
Committee members thanked the project team for progress and noted TGT support had helped sustain the restoration through the pandemic. Jayhawk representatives said they will share updated reports and floor plans with council and staff as the project proceeds.
No motions or votes were taken on the theater updates during the meeting.
