Topeka council elects representatives to regional planning and economic boards

After the city clerk outlined the MTPO (Metropolitan Topeka Planning Organization) election process, council members nominated several colleagues. The clerk then asked each council member to voice their two selections; the clerk tallied eight affirmative votes for both Councilmember Miller and Councilmember Bradbury, and the mayor declared them elected to MTPO.
When the council moved to select two city voting representatives for the Joint Economic Development Organization (JEDO), nominations included Councilmembers Banks, Hiller and Keller. The council used paper ballots for that vote. The city clerk reported Councilmember Banks received seven votes and Councilmember Hiller received six, and both were elected to one-year terms as JEDO voting representatives.
City officials and staff noted the MTPO meetings remain largely virtual and typically run about an hour. City Attorney and staff explained the voting rules for these appointments, including the requirement of a minimum of six affirmative votes to fill a position.
The mayor thanked the newly elected council members for serving on the two boards, noting the boards oversee significant project funding and regional coordination. The council also discussed collecting a master list of committee assignments to help members know existing committee memberships and reduce confusion during future appointments.
What’s next: The elected council representatives will take their seats on MTPO and JEDO and begin participating in board meetings; the city clerk will publish tallies and roster updates as part of the council’s public record.
