Topeka to interview three candidates to fill District 8 vacancy next week

The Topeka governing body announced at the end of its special budget work session that it will interview three applicants to fill the District 8 vacancy at next week's public meeting.
Mayor Duncan named the three candidates — Chris Phelps, Jeff Cohen and Murray McBee McGee — and explained the interview procedure: candidates will sit before the council, answer a set of questions (including one submitted by Councilmember Valdivia Alcala), and will not hear other candidates' answers. After the interviews the council will discuss and vote; a candidate must receive six affirmative votes to be appointed.
The clerk said applications and related materials will be posted with the Feb. 3 agenda. Council members indicated they could delay a final decision up to an additional week if they wished to check references; otherwise the council expects to conclude the appointment at or shortly after the public interviews.
