Commissioners approve up to $30,000 for America250 county celebration

The Board of Commissioners approved a county contribution of up to $30,000 on Feb. 16 to support Johnston County's America250 semiquincentennial programming.
Allison Elsey, chair of the county's America250 committee, described planned events, including a Tuscarora mural dedication in downtown Smithfield on March 14 and a large celebration at Johnston Community College on June 27 with living-history demonstrations, a parade, exhibits from local heritage organizations and a production of the musical 1776. Todd Johnson of the Johnston County Heritage Center said the committee has secured $40,000 in state grants (with $10,000 originally budgeted for the mural and a final mural cost of about $17,000) and $30,000 in community grants for a tour guidebook and historical markers.
Elsey said the committee needs additional funds for event planning and logistics, including an event coordinator; she asked the board for $30,000. A commissioner moved to approve funding up to $30,000; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The appropriation is to support celebration logistics and marketing; the board specified the amount as 'not to exceed' $30,000 to allow staff discretion in contracting and procurement. The committee said the county's visitor bureau and the county public information office will assist with marketing to reduce costs.
