Emily Hurst, manager of Wichita Animal Services, said the shelter had 969 animals come in during August, consisting of 453 cats and 487 dogs, and reported that only nine cats and 121 dogs were returned to their owners. Hurst described a running-at-large dog the shelter named "Peanut" and encouraged owners of lost pets to check wichita.gov/lostpets and contact the shelter promptly. "So this is just a reminder, our goal is to get these animals back to their families," Hurst said.
Hurst said unclaimed animals may be transferred to adoption partners, including the Kansas Humane Society, and announced a free microchip clinic on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Hap McLean Park (Park City), starting at 10 a.m., where the Kansas Humane Society will offer free microchips and most vaccines except rabies; the clinic will serve the first 200 attendees. Hurst provided an example animal number (180104) for the featured dog and described typical intake and transfer procedures.
The mayor and shelter manager urged the public to use wichita.gov/lostpets to view incoming animals and to contact the shelter for assistance with reclaiming pets; no policy or funding decisions were announced during the briefing.
Owners seeking a lost pet were directed to contact Wichita Animal Services immediately; unclaimed animals will be transferred to adoption partners in the days following intake.
