WICHITA, Kan. — The City Council approved funding for water and sewer main projects in the 2026 capital improvement program, totaling $19.1 million, during its Sept. 3 meeting.
Public Works presented planned projects that include arterial water mains ($3 million), distribution main replacements ($6.65 million), dead‑end mains elimination ($560,000), mains for future development ($2.7 million) and sewer collection main replacements ($6.2 million). Staff said the projects may be funded from future revenue bonds or utility cash reserves and that if bonds are issued an additional 8% would be added for financing and administrative costs.
Paul Gunzelman, Public Works and Utilities, said the program aims to reduce breaks, upsize undersized mains and improve fire protection and reliability. "This program replaces water lines that have failed or have been determined to be in critical condition after multiple breaks," he said.
Council approved initiating the projects, adopting resolutions and authorizing necessary signatures by unanimous vote.
