The Aransas Pass City Council voted to permit a monthly Art Walk on the 200–300 blocks of South Commercial Street beginning April 2026 and granted a one-year waiver of vendor permits.
Organizer Red Matthews (represented at the meeting) proposed events from 4 to 10 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. Fred Mathis, a downtown business owner, said he would provide onsite sanitation and trash collection and that vendors would be responsible for cleanup. Mathis told council the event will emphasize artisanship: "It's going to be all artists...not something that's ordered from China," and vendors will be limited to handmade items to support local businesses.
Council discussed logistics including vendor spacing to maintain a five-foot unobstructed pedestrian lane, vendor stall dimensions (approximately 6 feet by 15 feet), and plans to phase expansion down Wilson toward the harbor at a later date. Councilmembers expressed support for the initiative as a tool to increase downtown foot traffic and revitalization.
The motion passed unanimously. Council also linked the Art Walk schedule to amended Sip and Stroll hours so the second-Friday event will have extended beverage-consumption hours (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.).
