The Senate Judiciary Committee worked and passed Senate Bill 408, which excludes age-appropriate independent activities from the definition of a "child in need of care" in the revised Kansas code for children and makes conforming adjustments to related criminal statutes. The reviser said the bill would exclude children engaged in age-appropriate independent activities from child-in-need-of-care findings and align criminal law accordingly.
Senator Shane moved the committee pass SB 408 favorably and the motion carried on a voice vote. The chair noted there were no opponents on the bill at prior hearing and thanked members for their work. The committee adjourned before noon and the chair reminded members of upcoming working days and legislative schedule.
