Kalamazoo City Commissioners on Feb. 16 approved a broad consent agenda that included vendor contracts, capital purchases, easements for the Kalamazoo Events Center and acceptance of several grants and projects.
City Manager Hankins read consent items G1–G18 into the record. Notable items included a $124,914.09 sole‑source repair for clarifier gear drives at the water reclamation plant (G1), cybersecurity services through Rapid7 and DuePoint (agenda line indicated approximately $147,000), purchase of Ford Explorer utilities and Chevrolet Tahoes for public safety, extension of a Kronos human‑resources information system contract, mowing contracts for parks (Santiago Services), and multiple easement agreements with CD Arena LLC for infrastructure associated with the Kalamazoo Events Center. The agenda also listed an Act 381 brownfield plan for the Pergamon Peninsula at 111 Portage Street.
Roll call approved items 1–10 and 12–18; Commissioner Wilson recorded an abstention on items 15–17 because of an employer conflict.
On the regular agenda the commission unanimously approved H1, a one‑year extension with the Risk Management Authority through IBEX Insurance Agency for property and casualty coverage (premium not to exceed $1,130,954, a $100,000 deposit to the member retention fund, and a $174,589 budget amendment). The commission also approved H2, a sole‑source purchase with Ferguson Water Works for Neptune water meters in the amount of $2,000,000.
Staff indicated the list of contracts and dollar amounts was read from the agenda packet and that some amounts were read as presented during the meeting. The approvals authorize the city manager to execute related documents on behalf of Kalamazoo.
What it means: The approvals fund ongoing maintenance, public‑safety vehicle fleets, cyber and HR systems, and infrastructure tied to development at the Kalamazoo Events Center and other projects; the Neptune purchase updates metering hardware used in the distribution system.
Votes at a glance: The consent agenda passed on roll call with one abstention noted (Commissioner Wilson on items 15–17); H1 and H2 were approved by roll call votes with unanimous approval among commissioners present.
