Emily Hurst, shelter manager for Wichita Animal Services, told the mayor’s briefing that the animal shelter received 447 cats and 441 dogs in September and urged residents to help reunite pets with owners and to pursue spay-and-neuter options.
"When animals do go up for adoption, they are spayed and neutered, provided vaccinations, as well as...a microchip," Hurst said, adding the city has waived cat reclaim fees; owners only need to cover a $25 rabies voucher if shots are missing.
Hurst said only 10 cats were reclaimed by owners during the month while 109 dog owners came back for their pets, underscoring a continuing need for reunification and adoption efforts. She called attention to a free microchip event hosted by the Kansas Humane Society on Saturday, Oct. 18 (registration required) and to partner services from Bruce Veterinary Clinic (low-cost spay/neuter) and Wichita Animal Action League’s Alpha Clinic (Nov. 6).
Hurst showed a kitten labeled "Pirate" (animal number 181628) as the pet of the week to highlight adoption opportunities.
The briefing included no ordinance, budget vote or city action; Hurst’s update was informational and highlighted upcoming community clinic dates and partner resources.
