The Urbana Fire Department used the Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 16 to formally recognize a promotion to the rank of engineer.
A department representative explained that engineers are responsible for safe operation of fire apparatus, managing water supply at emergency scenes, and supporting officers in charge. The promoted firefighter (named in the record) was accompanied by family members who pinned the engineer badge. The firefighter and an official recited the oath to ‘‘preserve, protect, and defend the constitution and laws of the United States, the state of Illinois, and the charter and ordinances of the City of Urbana.’’ Colleagues and council members offered congratulations.
The acknowledgment was ceremonial; no policy or budget action followed at the meeting.
