Wendy Edwards said she returned to Urbana in 1999, holds graduate degrees (computer science and library & information science), works as a senior software engineer at a nonprofit, and cited fiscal stability, public safety and redevelopment of distressed commercial areas as her top priorities. Edwards said data-driven planning and clear, transparent policies (including guardrails for automatic license plate readers if adopted) are important to her.
Verdell Jones, who identified a background that includes being a firefighter for the city of Champaign and having local roots, emphasized a local mental-health crisis and rising crime as urgent concerns. Jones said he wants to pursue small, sustained steps to improve safety and opportunity and described firsthand exposure to challenging household conditions through emergency response.
Karen James described long-term residency in Urbana since 1998, volunteer work with PTA and health-related committees, and said she would bring neighborhood-focused, family-oriented experience to the role. James emphasized local connections and a desire to preserve community character.
Council members thanked the candidates and encouraged them to stay after the meeting for follow-up engagement. The committee did not make an appointment during the meeting; next steps were not specified in the committee record.
