Wichita Animal Services shelter manager Emily Hurst (Speaker 3) told the mayor’s briefing that the shelter has taken in more than 800 animals since Oct. 1, including 382 cats and 401 dogs, and that owner reclaim rates so far are low.
Hurst introduced Lillo, a mixed‑breed male puppy estimated between six months and a year old who was picked up in the field and will transfer to the Kansas Humane Society if not reclaimed. She said he has not yet been spayed or neutered but will be before transfer.
Hurst described partner services available to residents, including Bruce Veterinary Services’ low-cost mobile clinic and an Alpha Clinic offered by Wichita Animal Action League that provides urgent‑care–style services for about $30 per pet for those who income‑qualify. The shelter also shared spay‑and‑neuter program information and encouraged residents to apply via partners’ websites or social media pages.
Mayor (Speaker 1) reinforced the plea to reclaim or adopt animals and noted that the toy run charity supports more than 5,000 Wichita families during the holidays; he thanked rescue partners for helping reduce shelter occupancy.
