The City of Wichita announced that it has been awarded a $20,000,000 federal grant to make safety and accessibility upgrades along Broadway Avenue from 37th Street North to Pawnee.
Mayor (unnamed) said the award comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program and described the project as aimed at lowering roadway deaths and improving safety for both pedestrians and vehicles. The mayor said the project will include ADA accessibility upgrades "wherever necessary." The mayor stated the overall project will total $25,000,000, with the state committing $4,750,000 and Wichita’s match reported as $250,000.
The mayor read a statement from U.S. Senator Jerry Moran supporting the investment: "Investing in local roads and transportation infrastructure helps promote safe, thriving communities across Kansas. I'm pleased Wichita was selected for this investment to improve the safety, functionality, and convenience of travel for Kansans and to better serve the community's everyday transportation needs." The mayor also thanked state and federal officials and Public Works and Utilities staff for their roles in preparing the application.
City officials said construction is not expected to begin for roughly four to five years and that the city will conduct public engagement and community collaboration during the design process. Officials emphasized opportunities for residents to provide input during design as the next major procedural step.
Next steps: the city will begin a design and public outreach phase, with further schedule and procurement details to be set in subsequent planning rounds.
